Memories of Love

Grandmas hold our tiny hands for just a little while, but our hearts forever.
                   - Author unknown

Nanny, I remember the Queen Anne house and the sound of the cars going by on Aurora Ave.
I remember picking blackberries in the front yard until my fingers and clothes were permanently stained, with you watching me from the kitchen window while doing the dishes.
The forget-me-nots that were growing along the path, with blue bells growing around the house, and the old fish pond.
The rug in the living room with the circle design on it that I would run around on until I got so dizzy I fell down.
The creaky stairwell that leads downstairs and the steep staircase that leads upstairs.
The sound of the piano playing right before I fell asleep.
Riding the bus into downtown Seattle and seeing the Great Seattle Fire exhibit at the Museum of History and Industry.
Heading to the Seattle Center and buying me hot pink cotton candy.
Eating dinner on the cutting board in the kitchen and eating sliced apples on shell plates.
The tile flower pattern on the bathroom floor and the toilet that would always run in the night.
Nanny, I remember the Georgia Sweetheart lullaby that you would sing to me as I went to sleep.
The time the car door opened, when we were going up that big hill, and you pulled me back in by the seat of my pants.
I remember the time when I was sick, you choked, and I got my first real ambulance ride; I remember being so scared for you.
I remember eating on the card table in the living room while watching your little black and white TV.
I remember the Woodland Park Zoo, the conservatory, and the park with the big slide.
I remember our trip to Monroe to see your Steinway Piano and listening to classical music in the piano restorer’s garage.
I remember you taking me to the Nutcracker Ballet at McCaw Hall, which was not too long ago.

But what I remember the best is your smile, your kisses, your hugs, and all the new memories that we have yet to share, experience, and create together.

Happy Birthday Nanny,
Love always, your darling granddaughter
